It’s the summer and it’s a great time to get running.
One question I’m often asked is ‘What runner should I buy?’ or ‘Should I buy new runners this year?’
For the average runner doing a gentle jog or energetic walk in their locality, the things to be aware of are:
o Good shock absorbency in the shoe to protect your joints and ensure a more comfortable run. This will also prevent injuries both in the short- and long-term.
o Fallen arches – a supportive running shoe will provide stability to the fallen arch and keep the angle of the joints in the right place.
o If you lean on the outside of the heel, a neutral shoe will suit you better rather than one with an over-corrected arch support.
o Do try on the shoe in the shop. If you feel your foot is rolling in or being pushed outwards, this is not the shoe for you. Rather, your foot should be in a neutral position – no inward movement at your knees with a comfortably alignment from your foot to your hip.
o Mileage on the shoe – in your existing runners, look for wear and tear in the sole and heel of the shoe. If you can bend the runner in two, it will not support your foot.
You don’t have to buy the most expensive shoe, but you should try to buy the shoe that best supports your foot.
